COCKADOODLE: THE EROGENOUS ART OF MAURICE VELLEKOOP

Cockadoodle: The Erogenous Art of Maurice Vellekoop is a new exhibition that uncorks the Canadian artist’s contribution to illustration, underground comics and contemporary erotica.

His first European solo exhibition, it will feature a wide selection of the artist’s erotic output on show alongside examples of his mainstream editorial work. Vellekoop draws inspiration from a vast and familiar pool of televisual and filmic motifs and is widely marketable (commercial clients include Vogue, Wallpaper, New York Times and Rolling Stone) yet unashamedly erotic.

The exhibition has been created as Vellekoop embarks upon a graphic memoir, I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together! commissioned by the Canadian Council for the Arts and edited by author and award-winning art director Chip Kidd. The exhibition includes hand painted illustrations, printed matter and comic strips from an extensive selection of Vellekoop’s career such as Maurice Vellekoop’s Pin-Ups, his most successful book of explicit male ‘beefcake’ illustrations, featuring calendar boys, musical idols, sporting legends and figures from fantasy, history and literature.

The exhibition will be at Twenty Twenty Two, as part of Manchester Pride Fringe from 15th August to 13th September and then at the Homotopia Festival in Liverpool from 25th October to 20th November. Check out Maurice Vellekoop’s work at www.mauricevellekoop.com.
