THE VERY BEAR-Y HEATH JORDAN

With only four films under his belt, Heath Jordan has become one of the most sought after stars in the porn biz. Yet he’s not anything like fans might imagine him to be.

He doesn’t drink. (“I have maybe been drunk about five times in my life”). He doesn’t party. (“I’m a homebody.”). He’s an introvert. (“My biggest fear is speaking in front of large crowds of people.”)

Probably the biggest surprise about the man who gained notoriety by appearing on the cover of Bear Magazine is that he has only recently embraced his hair.

Like Cyndi Crawford, who as a child hated the mole that became her trademark, Jordan was embarrassed by his fur.

He remembers feeling like the hairiest kid in school. And maybe he was. He hid it whenever possible back then. Today, however, he’s cashing in by letting it all hang out.

How has your family reacted to your career choice?

My family does not know I shoot porn.

Were you born with the perfect body?

Not at all. I remember going on a cruise to the Bahamas and seeing a picture of me. I was 18 and pudgy. Not fat but not toned up or anything. That’s when I decided I really wanted to change my body.

    What did you do?

I moved to LA and began studying up on fitness. I would spend all of my free time at the gym doing cardio.

How do you maintain it today?

I love to eat and that is probably my downfall. I think I could eat and blow up in size very easily. I lift weights for an hour every day. On top of that, I must do 40 – 60 minutes of cardio every day.

What inspired your career in porn?

I have always loved porn and sex. I mean who doesn’t.

How did you get your start?

I met porn stars and directors from Raging Stallion at last year’s Folsom Street Fair. They asked if I might be interested in doing a video. I thought about it for a while and in late winter I finally emailed them back.

Who was your first shoot for?

I was already booked for my first role with Raging Stallion but my first shoot ended up being for Bear Magazine. I did the shoot a week before Christmas. Then things began happening so fast. I ended up in two magazines and then the 2011 calendar. It was hilarious to see my picture next to guys that I had spent hours jerking off too.

Was Raging Stallion your first film then?

No. I was scheduled to do Raging Stallion in the spring but then I got a call from Hot House for a film being shot in San Francisco. I agreed to do it even though I wasn’t exactly ready for it. I had just started my dieting and was not yet where I wanted to be. Still, it was a lot of fun and a great experience. Since that time I have been approached by a lot of online companies and major studios, including several butch bear films because of the Bear Magazine cover.

Do you consider yourself a bear?

I have always been really hairy. I started growing hair at 13. It’s only in the past couple of years, however, that I have come to terms with it and accept that I am this way. Growing up I thought I was the only hairy person because everywhere you look on TV and in ads, everyone is smooth.

How do you feel about being classified as a ‘bear’ star?

I think people have the idea that the bear model needs to be overweight. It is really about the hair. I guess I am more of a muscle bear as people would call it. I don’t generally wear a beard.

Do you prefer to be smooth?

I do not shave my body or anything but I do shave my face often. I rarely walk around with facial hair. I think people at work and the gym were kind of confused when I had the beard for so long. I grew it out last winter for the photo shoot and then again in the spring for the film. Once I get past the itching stage, I’m ok with hair. It’s week four of the beard that gets a little uncomfortable.

Do you prefer your men to be hairy or smooth?

I think I am infatuated with what I don’t have so I like guys to be smooth. I really get really turned on when a guy has a naturally smooth ass and no hair on his hole. I just go nuts over that.

“I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED PORN AND SEX. I MEAN WHO DOES’T.“

Do you remember your first day on the set?

I was really nervous that first day on set. I woke up hours before I was supposed to be ready. Luckily, I had to do the photos for the movie the day before, so I was able to check out the set then; that made me feel a little better.

Were you shy about being naked in front of strangers?

I was not shy at all. I’m proud to show off my body. I work hard on it. I am a bit of an exhibitionist so I have no problem being nude in front of people. Now if you ask me to speak in front of a large group, that’s a different story. I am actually a shy person.

What was most surprising about filming porn?

I was surprised at how nice and professional everyone on set is.

How has being in gay adult porn impacted your life?

I was busy before but now I am really busy. I don’t know what porn guys did before the Internet, Twitter and Facebook. I have people writing to me all the time. I never before understood the point of Twitter but it has landed me several jobs.

How has being in gay porn impacted your relationships?

I am in a solid relationship so the new relationships I have gained have been a lot of new great friends.

Is having sex in front of cameras fun or is it a job?

It’s not what people expect it to be. There are a lot of challenges on set. There is so much to think about regarding lighting, positions, and staying hard. You are having sex in positions that are not comfortable. Still, if I didn’t have fun, I wouldn’t do it. Also, the more films I do, the better I get.

    Practice makes perfect?

You could say that. The last film I did showed vast improvement over my first.

Is there a porn star you would like to have a scene with?

    François Sagat.

Is there anything you won’t do on film?

I won’t do sounding and I won’t be fisted because those are two things I don’t even do in private. I also wouldn’t do any bareback sex.

Where do you hope your film career might lead?

I’m not really sure. I am just having fun with it all right now.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about a career in gay porn?

I would advise they really make sure it is something they want to do. I have so many friends that tell me that they regret doing videos. I have no regrets.

In your opinion, what is the state of porn today?

The state of porn is constantly evolving and changing. The Internet has allowed greater access to porn. It’s basically anywhere and everywhere now; from computer to phone to iPad. It’s great for the consumer but not so great for the porn companies and models. It’s like what the music industry experienced a few years back. They waited too long to come to terms with the changes and lost lots of money.

“GROWING UP I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY HAIRY PERSON BECAUSE EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK ON TV AND IN ADS, EVERYONE IS SMOOTH.”

    What changes have you seen?

Consumers don’t need to wait until the next DVD comes out anymore. You can get the new movies and scenes right away. Also, models have their own websites now, allowing fans to follow them more closely. It also means models don’t need the studios as much anymore. I myself have bought memberships to some of the model sites.

What’s the biggest issue facing the industry today?

Guys are obsessed with the free sites like XTube. There are a lot of options out there that allow guys to not have to pay the $59 for a DVD anymore.

Do you think amateurs may one day trump studio porn?

They are coming close to doing it already. The amateur porn industry is really popular. Some major studios have started to offer websites that are more amateur like.

What would fans be surprised to know about you?

I am a homebody. I am not really a going out person. I maybe have been out to a bar five times all year and once was for gay pride.

Any misperceptions about you that you’d like to clear up now?

I heard there was a blog that wrote that my feet are too hairy. I am not sure when they saw my feet but I wouldn’t think of my feet as extreme hobbit hairy feet or anything.

Besides working out, what do you do in your spare time?

I spend a lot of time with my friends, my family and my dog. I am also a huge news junkie. I don’t think I can go a day without watching Brian Williams and the nightly news on NBC during the week, or just CNN for that matter.

October 11th is National Coming Out Day. How was your coming out experience?

I struggled with my sexuality. I can remember being in the 6th grade and always being attracted to the guys but I just didn’t know why. I kind of outed myself in college when I was sitting around with a bunch of my buddies. We were all talking about sex and I made a reference to “This one time I had sex with a woman”. I said it as if I was grossed out. They all kind of looked at me with shock and I turned about three shades of red and tried to play it off as if I was referring to one particular woman.

Did your friends accept it when they found out?

They were absolutely shocked. Most didn’t believe me. One friend on the football team still thinks I was joking.

Do you recommend guys come out on National Coming Out Day?

Coming out was the best thing I ever did. Being able to accept and enjoy and live my life is so great. There were some people that I lost communication with, but I explained it to everyone that I am no different today than I was yesterday. I wish that I would have been able to come out long before I did but I guess everyone does it at the right time for them.

Who is the real Heath Jordan?

I’m truly a nice, down to earth guy and yeah, believe it or not, I’m a bit shy.
